In my opinion this perspective is more flattering to the sculpture, since it focuses on a specific detail, it allows the viewer to catch and share the emotion of the moment much better. And the fact that we see the man from his back still allows for a kind of "wondering" moment (is he surprised, scared, annoyed, unimpressed...?).
The stone fits the topic very nicely, the lines and different colours seem to add movement to the moment. In a way, robes and the neck of the dragon seem to be moving, yet the man expression seems still (or stiff).
Finally, the drapes look very carefully done and somewhere between realistic and anime looking. I personally prefer that kind of drape sculping that looks almost as a second skin, but that would probably not suit the pathos of the moment so well.
